The Society of Professional Women (SPW)
"How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she-roes!" – Maya Angelou
Did you know that in the next four years, more than 1.2 million veterans will return home from war? These heroes have extensive leadership, teamwork, critical thinking and problem-solving skills and have learned how to work under intense pressure, yet so many return, unable to find employment. Overall unemployment among veterans is well above the national average and for women, especially, the situation is getting worse. The unemployment rate rose to 12.5% last year, which means that nearly one in five women who served is currently unemployed.
In order to raise awareness about veterans’ issues and provide a forum for veterans to connect with the business leaders in our community, we are doing something unique at our SPW Trademark event on July 17. We will be having MSG Juanita Milligan, a Purple Heart recipient, speak about the featured non-profit, The Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House, as well as her own experience returning home from war. Alex Archawski, founder of Greater Philadelphia Veterans Network, will explain how business leaders can capitalize on the talent these veterans have developed. Check out the Veterans Resource page we compiled for veterans, and the business leaders in the community who are looking for ways to support our heroes.
Many of our sponsors have graciously donated tickets to enable veterans to attend this special event of both honor and entertainment. To complete the evening, The Water Coolers Comedy Troupe, a group of Broadway stars straight from NYC, will treat us to a "laugh out loud" comedy on the universally relatable realities of office politics! Be sure to register early, as seats are going fast!
